The female Purple Hairstreak is adark brown with a bright purple patch on the forewings. The male is mostly dark brown with a overlay of dull pirple sheen. The underside in both the male and the female is greyish brown with a white streak across each wing and has two orange spots on the hindwings close to the short tails.

Where to sight species

Can be found in Oak woodlands. Adults tend to spend most of the time high up in the trees flying about.


Cranmore, Newchurch, Borthwood.
